Doug Campbell
On August 28, 2002 Doug Campbell of Sioux City, Iowa rolled his lawnmower over an embankment and onto the road below. This caused major injuries to his legs including severing of the left femoral artery. In the ambulance, on the way to Mercy Medical Center, Doug’s heart stopped due to massive blood loss. Following his arrival at the trauma center, his heart needed resuscitation on two occasions. After several hours of surgery, the doctors finally closed the wounds and stabilized his blood pressure. In the end, over 200 blood products were used to help Doug survive.
On Friday, July 9, 2004 Doug was reunited with some of the donors who provided over 200 blood products that assisted medical staff to save his life. He also presented each donor with a commemorative lapel pin as a small token of his appreciation for the dedication of the volunteer donors. The reunion was held at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City, through a partnership with the Siouxland Community Blood Bank (SCBB).
Doug continues to express his sincere appreciation to the Siouxland Community Blood Bank and the volunteer donors who helped save his life by sharing his story and testimonial as the Honorary Spokesperson for SCBB’s annual summer
recruitment campaign, “Heroes Unite.”
